Join Great Lakes Science Center and NASA Glenn Research Center for a Stellar Eclipse Weekend, Saturday, August 19 through Monday, August 21!

In collaboration with the NASA Glenn Research Center, we’ll be celebrating the amazing solar eclipse that will be visible across the United States on Monday, August 21, with a whole weekend of hands-on activities, special demonstrations, simulcast eclipse coverage from around the country on NASA TV and even an outdoor sun salutations yoga session.

Guests can check out explosive demonstrations like Energize It!, learn more about 3-D printers, blast off with a Big Science Show, and watch the eclipse from our garage lawn.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, August 19, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, August 20 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, August 21 (approximate hours for the eclipse are 1-4 p.m. on Monday, with a predicted peak time of 2:30 p.m.).

Energize It! Demonstration

Location: Cleveland Creates Zone, Level 1
Times: 12:15 p.m. Saturday, 2:15 p.m. Sunday, 11:15 a.m. Monday
Thermal, chemical, potential and kinetic, oh my! Energy is all around us and we’ll investigate how energy can transform in a variety of ways, sometimes with explosive results!

 

Wonders of Water Workshop

Location: Demonstration Labs, Level 2
Times: 1 p.m. Saturday, 1 p.m. Sunday
Experience the wonders of water in this fun, hands-on family workshop sponsored by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD). We’ll explore water filtration and other technology that helps make our lake great.

 

3-D Printer Cart Activity

Location: Promenade, Lower Level
Times: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday
Watch our 3-D printer in action as we put a fun spin on pinhole viewers, a common tool used to observe solar events such as the upcoming eclipse. Learn how this technology works and what it can be used for.

 

Picture Yourself in Space Cart

Location: NASA Glenn Visitor Center, Level 1
Times: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Sunday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday
Imagine yourself soaring through the stars while posing for a free souvenir photograph.

           

UV Investigator Cart Activity

Location: BioMedical Technology Gallery, Level 1
Times: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Sunday
Explore some of the sun’s invisible energy -- ultraviolet light -- with this hands-on activity. Guests can make their own color-changing bracelet that will alert them to some of the sun’s most dangerous rays. 

 

Photo Op with “Eva”

Pose for a picture with our larger than life astronaut, Eva, as she makes surprise appearances throughout the weekend.

 

Lift Off Big Science Show

Location: Cleveland Creates Zone, Level 1
Time: 2:15 pm Saturday, 3:15 pm Sunday   
Before you can launch into outer space, the first step is getting off the ground. Things that go up must come down -- sometimes with a bang!

Time: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday
Visit with a NASA Research Center scientist and educators as they get hands-on to explore and explain the phenomenon that is a solar eclipse.

 

Sun Salutations Yoga

Location: Garage Roof Lawn, Outside-Main Level
Rain location will be indoors
Time: Noon Monday
Bring your yoga mat for a brief professionally led yoga session featuring sun salutations on our garage roof lawn, prior to the commencement of the eclipse.

 

Rocket Launch

Location: Garage Roof Lawn, Outside-Main Level
Rain location is Promenade, Lower Level
Times: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday
Countdown to launch….3…2….1. Have you ever wondered how rockets work? Explore chemistry and physics while launching your own rocket. Stand back and let your imagination soar as your rocket takes flight!

 

NASA TV Watch Party

Location: Discover Gallery, Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater
Time: Noon to 4 p.m. Monday
We’ll be simulcasting the official NASA TV’s full coverage of the solar eclipse from around the country, including areas of total eclipse coverage. 

           

Lawn Games

Location: Garage Roof, Outside-Main Level (weather permitting)

Join us for lawn games and activities on the garage roof leading up to the eclipse.
